Being a Patton fan, I was really disappointed when I finally read this, mainly due to the whole set up of the book. Instead of discussing Patton's leadership in a clear and cohesive manner, this book is merely a compilation of 183 random quotes and short stories on Patton. Although the quotes and stories are arranged in categories, this book is in essence nothing more than one of those thought-of-the-day gift books.
The problem with books like this is the story, personality, and life of a historical figure is reduced to a blob of random thoughts taken completely out of context. You may not think this is such a bad thing, but Patton's words and actions at age 21, had far less experience and entirely different motivations behind them than what he did and said when he was 40. This is all lost in the book.
If that's what you're looking for, then you'll probably love this book. But if you're looking for a book that gives an in-depth look into Patton's life and leadership, then there are other books that do a far better job. |
